Hi We are planning to cruise around Ireland in the summer holidays. If anyone is interested in coming along - then please make contact. We are not wanting to 'race' around in just a few days but wanting to stop and enjoy both the local coastline and the people that make it special. We may do the trip in two parts. Part 1 Southampton to Northern Ireland (clockwise)leave boat and fly home. Part 2 Return to NI then back to southampton end of summer holiday.
There may be a part 1a - West Coast of Scotland Trip! Paul |

Saturday 31st Update Well here we are in North Wales - still made Ireland! Quite a evetfull cruise to date.
Departed Sun 25th after a morning of jobs. Forcast was fairly good - but the actual sea conditions were not. Given the forcast we had hoped for Plymouth or Fowey. The reality was an uncomfortable Christchurch bay into a strengthening Westerly wind. On to virtually Weymouth to avoid the winds and then a duck around Potland. Lyme Bay was not good. So we finally made Brixham with minutes to spare on the last food orders.
Monday 26th A good run around from Brixham to Falmouth for Fuel and supplies. visibility was still holding up despite a front coming in and the promise of reduced visibility. We departed for the Scillies Lizard Point was the best we had seen it - no overfalls and in sunshine. We curved into Mounts bay to keep the westerly windsand swellto a minimum. As we passed Runnel Stone the vis dropped to 1/2 mile - we ran with radar and reduced speed. While in the Lands End TSS the drive failed. We were on the edge of the southbound lane and we could see the Van Gough (AIS) bearing down. The coastgaurd updated local shipping while we looked at the problem. IT was quite clear we could do nothing but get a tow back. Given our proximity to bigger shipping and with such poor vis the Penlee Lifeboat was launched. We had an hour- to have a hot meal and monitor our rate of drift. We got a tow back (images to follow) and should thank 'Patch'the coxswain and his crew. So now we are in Newlyn with a failed drive leg. We were planning for We got Pasties from the 'Oggie Oggie' place. The Lizzard was the calmest we had seen |

Tuesday 27th One of the aims of this cruise was to stop at places we had not been to before and to meet local people and learn more about the area/community. Well being towed in by the Seven class lifeboat did all of these things - a very warm welcome was forthcoming with various offers of assistance. Thank you Newlyn. Redbay Boats were on the case and had shipped out by lunchtime a new drive leg for us. Lack of hydralic pressure was the sympton but 'why' was as yet unknown. To get a repair we would need to be lifted out - would the quayside crane be up for it? Kathryn despatched from home the set of lifting strops/shackles. so it was then a waiting game for things to fall into place. we tried the local pubs and restaurants and spent time doing minor jobs. |

Wednesday 28th With the strops having arrived and the crane being an unknown, we wanted to attempt a lift and get on the quay ahead of the leg arriving. This went well, for which the Harbour master must be complemented' on the High tide at 18.00 So the boat was now on wood chocks and we found a local B&B.

Thursday 29th The new leg arived early afternoon and myself and Mat from MOunts Bay Engineering set about doing a swap. This went easily and we ran the engine up on te quay with the fire hose and the muffs! we had drive again... The boat was lifted back in and trials done in the harbour. So planning now for the cruise again - the only real issue was that the high pressue we had hoped to use to cross to Ireland had passed us by and we now had reasonably strong W/NW wnds forcast.

Friday 30th A slow start by te time we said good bye to evey one who we had met and who had helped. We now realised the Scillies would not have us visit this trip. We set off fairly aprehensively on the rounding of Lands end, we had various plans for Padstow or on to Kilmore Quay in SE Ireland. Lands end was good to us but the Winds were again W/NW and blowing a force 5, so Kilmore Quay was be 100 miles right into the waves - so e struck of due north (from Land end) and headed for Milford Haven, again a port we had not stopped in. We made reasonable progess in dull conditions. |

Saturday 31st Fuelled up last night and ready again. Problem was again a strong Westerly wind forcast. We went out into a short chop (in Milford Haven itself) and sure heading Skomer and Stockhlm Islands it we created a new cruising speed 17knots. Just on the plane but very little slamming. We went through very heavy overfalls in Jack Sound then on across Brydes Bay to Ramsey Island and Ramsey sound. We were no travelling predominantly North with the seas on the beam. Ireland again was not looking good so we headed for Bardsley Island (southern tip of Llyne peninsular) Overfalls off here reduced us to 10 knots for half an hour. Finally the sun broke out and we eleced to make Holyhead on Anglesey a good run to the Western tip when with just 3 miles short of our destination to find we were in the worst overfalls we had been in date. 5 knots the seas boiling and frequently mounting the screen/tubes, well finally we got in an realised during the mooring up process that the winds had picked up. Later we learnt 30 knots (only 20 forecast). So tomorrw the winds are reducing from 12 noon so again we will head north and west. who knows where we will get to.... One thing is for certain we are both having fun again - and more so when the sun is out Paul and Bryn |

Hello Paul & Bryn, what an adventure you guys are having and what practical chaps you are to sort the leg prob and just get on with things, that's the spirit and a great example to us all. Loads of RIBsters are watching your reports so keep the info coming when you can. If you need help in the Isle of Man, ring me as BIBOA has a 'top man' contact on the island. Best of luck guys. Sunday 1st Today the winds were due to drop by mid afternoon. We had a brisk walk in the moring to South Stack light House and then departed 12 noon for Strangford Lough (Northern Ireland). passing close to the Isle of Man. Slight crop we gratually reduced and enabled us to make this 70Nm run in just over 3 hours. a tricky entrance due to rocks/narrows and 8 knot tides! This is the first location of a tidal powered generator. We stopped at Portaferry - a very picturest small town on the edge of the narrows. Strangford lough is a hiden wonder of nature - we were told. We had a good meal in the sailing club and chatting to locals established that spending the following day here would be worthwile and allow us to explore the lough the following day.
