What is BIBOA?

BIBOA Ltd is the UK RIB club for those who like to cruise and socialise in Rigid Inflatable Boats. Read more.

Anglesey World Record

Some photo here:
Through the Swellies at 50 knots
BIBOA member Marc Lyne, IT Director at Bupa and Engineer Dean Watson scorched the 8.25 metre Scorpion RIB, Ocean Devil around Anglesey in 1 hour 21 minutes to reduce the previous record by 14 minutes (subject to official confirmation).  They ran anti-clockwise starting at Beaumaris Pier, slowed whilst passing through the Skerries tidal race and ran at full speed through the Menai Strait where the usual speed limit of 5 mph had been officially relaxed and through the infamous rock strewn Swellies between the Britannia and Menai bridges. The Harbour Master and Coastguard carefully monitored the arrangements and several Yacht Clubs helpfully adjusted their sailing routines during the attempt.  Ocean Devil was constructed by the Lymington firms of Scorpion RIBs and Dave Crawford Marine both of which have previously assisted successful World Powerboat Record attempts. The pair were kindly sponsored by Raymarine.

And a few notes from Marc:

Launch boat

3 high speed runs just to check everything working fine

Tie up, wait for 20 minutes before rendezvous with Les and Gill the RYA timekeepers, Kevin Goulding (Hotribs.com), Alex from Powerboat and Rib Magazine at Baumaris Pier

DISASTER… turned the key and the engine did not start, WHAT!!

10 minutes of panic later, Mike Deacon on the phone, Charles from The Marine Club, Menai Bridge, suggested a knock on the started motor with a hammer, BINGO… started perfectly, we were off (starter motor has now been replaced).

After a quick meeting with the RYA timers; Les and Gill, and Kevin and Alex, we were off, for 1 mile in the wrong direction to get a run up to the start.

Full throttle trimmed out a little, reving a 3750 rpm, we were off, flat calm.

First set of slightly rough water, 1 meter confused sea was as we were getting near Point Lynas. A few blips of the throttle and a few awkward landings and a few airborne propeller noises and we were through in 5 minutes.

We trimmed in a little and put the left hand trim tab down a few notches so we could fly level, which dropped the speed by half a knot, but made the ride much safer.

The second area of confused sea was around Middle Mouse and the Skerries, again a few adjustments and 5 minutes later we were back in calmer water. The same again before and on the South Stack. Then we were in the calm running down milky soft seas down to the south west entrance to the Menai Strait. This is where we hit 4 knots of tide running against us. We skirted the edges as close as we dare to lessen the effect of the tide.

Then it was on to the big one… The Swellies. With some expert guidance from Dean, we were through… FEW… I had been fearing those rocks. The tide had lessened and we were back to full speed through to the finishing line.

Kevin from Hotribs.com very kindly gave us a bottle of Champagne and the existing record holder Ian Greenwood was there to congratulate us, FANTASTIC. Les and Gill confirmed our time as 1 hour 21 minutes. Perfect.

I have got to say, I have never driven a boat with the throttle fully open apart from a few blips, even in the few races I have done, but that Scorpion hull and the Yanmar did not miss a beat, absolutely perfect. Against the tide, the lowest speed we saw was on the GPS was 46 knots and the fastest 50knots.
